HOW TO PLAY

WASHER TOSS
Gold and Black Overview Badge

Washer Toss is a target-tossing game played between two players or two teams. Players toss washers toward a target box containing a center cup or hole and score points according to where each washer comes to rest.

The standard game is played to 21 points or more.

A game consists of a series of rounds. In each round, each side throws four washers.

The entire round must be completed before points are officially calculated and before a winner can be declared.

The object of Washer Toss is to score points by tossing washers toward the opposing target.

Points are awarded according to the washer's final resting position:

  • 3 points — Washer in the hole
  • 2 points — Washer on the outside top edge of the box
  • 1 point — Washer in the box
  • 0 points — Washer outside the scoring areas

The standard game is won by finishing a completed round with 21 points or more and having the winning score after all washers in that round have been thrown and scored. There is no requirement to score exactly 21.

  • A round consists of four washers thrown by each side, for a total of eight washers.
  • The player or team entitled to throw first throws one washer.
  • The opposing player or team then throws one washer.
  • Players continue alternating one washer at a time until each side has thrown all four washers.
  • A round is not complete until all eight washers have been thrown and have come to rest.
  • Points are not officially calculated until the entire round is complete.

OUTSIDE SCORING AREA

  • A washer does not have to land directly in the box or hole to score.
  • A washer may strike the ground before reaching the target and bounce into the box or hole.
  • A washer may also strike the box, another washer, or another part of the target before coming to rest.
  • A washer that changes position during the round is scored according to where it ultimately comes to rest.
  • The final resting position determines the score.
  • Every washer remains live and in play until the round is complete.
  • A washer may be struck or moved by another washer.
  • A washer may bounce, slide, roll, ricochet, or otherwise change position during normal play.
  • A washer’s score is determined solely by its final resting position at the end of the round.
  • How the washer reached that position does not affect its score.
  • The final resting position determines the score.
